High quality 6th grade entrance exam method and schedule in Hanoi

High-quality secondary schools including Cau Giay, Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem and Le Loi organize admissions and entrance exams to select 6th grade students.

According to the guidelines for admission to grade 6 in the 2022-2023 school year of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, public secondary schools recruit students according to the lines prescribed by the People’s Committees of districts, towns and cities. However, for high-quality schools that are recognized by the City People’s Committee, enrollment does not follow lines, if the number of registered students exceeds the quota, they will be considered for admission or admission in combination with testing and capacity assessment.

Four high-quality secondary schools including Cau Giay, Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem, and Le Loi (Ha Dong) all chose the admission method that combines testing and capacity assessment with the exam schedule falling in mid-June. The exam subjects are Math, Vietnamese, and English, but the eligibility requirements, time, or form of doing the test are different.

Cau Giay Secondary School recruiting 440 students for 11 classes. Contestants or their parents must have a household registration or actual residence in the area of Cau Giay district, their ability and quality in 5 years of primary school must be assessed as Good or Pass; Year-end test scores for Math, Vietnamese (for grades 1, 2) reach 18 or more per year, and year-end test scores in Math, Vietnamese, and English (grades 3, 4, 5) reach 26 or higher (no subject less than 8).

The enrollment method is a combination of testing and capacity assessment:

Admission score = Admission score + Test score (coefficient 2) + Priority score (if any).

In which, the maximum admission score is 10 (2 points per year); maximum priority score of 1.5; test scores are equal to the sum of three test scores in Math, Vietnamese and English.

Thanh Xuan Secondary School recruiting 8 classes. Instead of only considering students in Thanh Xuan district, the school recruited all over Hanoi. The condition is to have a year-end test score in Math, Vietnamese (grades 1 to 5) and English (grades 3 to 5) with a score of 9 each.

Like Cau Giay Secondary School, the school enrolls students based on admission and test scores, capacity assessment and priority scores. In which, the entrance examination scores are calculated at the end of the year from grades 1 to 5 for Math and Vietnamese and from grades 3 to 5 for English (reduced to a 10-point scale).

Nam Tu Liem Secondary School recruiting 8 classes (240 students) including 6 high quality classes with day boarding and 2 high quality classes with supplementary English programs according to Cambridge output standards. Students all over Hanoi are registered.

Candidates must have the ability and quality for 5 years of primary school to be assessed as Pass or above. Results in Math and Vietnamese reached 17 (in grades 1 and 2); In three subjects, Math, Vietnamese, and English, with scores of 26 (in grades 3, 4, and 5), none of which is below 8.

Similar to Cau Giay and Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem Secondary School still calculates admission scores through admissions and tests, evaluates and prioritizes points according to general regulations. However, the school also adds consolation points if there are prizes in cultural, artistic and sports competitions or certificates of TOEFL Primary, Cambridge English at Flyers level.

The remaining high-quality secondary schools are Le Loi recruited 245 students residing in Ha Dong district. The admission condition is that the student has a transcript from grades 1 to 5 that has achieved the title of “Student who successfully completes the learning and training contents” (the results of the assessment of the subjects with good completion, competence, and quality) Good; Year-end periodical test in Math and Vietnamese from 9 points or more in one subject).

Students with regular scores in Math and Vietnamese in grades 3-4-5 are all 10, and English 9 and above are also eligible to apply. If the student fails to achieve the academic record, the student will still be registered if he/she wins the prize/medal in the National, Southeast Asian, International Math, Vietnamese and English exams and other special cases.

The school calculates admission points based on admission scores, tests (factor 2) and priority points. Particularly for admission, the school adds primary school grades with incentives and priorities. In which, the academic score is the total score of the periodical exam at the end of the year 1 to 5 in Math, Vietnamese with coefficients of 2 and grade 4, 5 in English, Science, History and Geography.

It can be seen that the admission requirements and the calculation of admission scores for each school are different. With the test, the Department of Education and Training only gives general guidelines such as the maximum time for each subject to be 60, the content is mainly in the 5th grade program, not for all schools. Exam time, format and exam schedule for each school are as follows:
