The city of Lysychansk is just a few kilometers south of Sievierodonetsk, where one of the biggest battles is taking place. Ukraine claims to be regaining control of some areas.

“I went with the head of my office to the east. We are in Lysychansk and Soledar,” Zelensky said in his nightly online speech.

In two separate videos posted later, Mr Zelensky, wearing his signature khaki t-shirt, appeared to be talking to troops in a bunker.

“You guys deserved a win – that’s the most important thing. But not at any cost,” Mr. Zelensky said.

Reuters could not immediately confirm whether the videos were shot in Lysychansk and Soledar.

The trips revealed publicly on June 5 are Zelensky’s rare trip outside the capital Kiev since Russia began a special military operation and may be the closest to the front line.

Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk in the Luhansk region and Soledar in the Donetsk region. All make up the Donbass region, the industrial center of Ukraine.

Observers say that achieving the goals in the east is necessary for Russian President Vladimir Putin to declare a successful military operation.

Earlier, on June 5, the President of Ukraine said that he had visited the frontline troops in the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia, the governor of the region stated that 60% of the area is occupied by Russia.

Zelensky’s office later said he had also visited a medical facility in the area and spoke to people forced to leave their homes. He promised to take measures to ensure that all displaced people will be resettled soon.

“We will help you solve this problem,” the president’s office quoted Zelensky as saying.
