The most beautiful shipwreck beach in Greece, the pristine scenery is heart-stopping
Navagio is also known as the “shipwreck” beach. This place is not only the most spectacular beach on the island of Zakynthos, but also one of the most beautiful in Greece and the Mediterranean.
This cove is nestled among towering cliffs, fine white sand, beautiful blue water and most notably the ruins of a shipwreck.
This ship has a very glorious past before unfortunately falling into the hands of cigarette smugglers. In October 1980, to evade inspection by the Greek authorities, she ran aground into the shallow waters of this bay. Since then, it has been forever trapped in the sparkling pebbled sand in the middle of the beach.
Navagio in Greek means shipwreck. Thanks to the presence of this wreck, it became famous around the world. This place has incredible beauty, once known as the entrance to San Giorgio delle Rocce – a monastery overlooking high cliffs.
The color of the sea water here is very beautiful, turning from deep blue to turquoise due to the presence of sulfur caves scattered around the beach. During high tide, a large amount of sulfur is released.
When coming here, you can admire the breathtaking scenery from above thanks to a small walkway, from which you can see the whole bay. You can only get here by sea, by chartered small boats or by booking tours departing from Porto Vromi.
If you intend to come here, you should check the weather conditions in advance, usually in the afternoon there will be strong waves, the schedule is more or less affected by this.
