Wildfire raging near Athens, many houses damaged

“Helped” by the strong wind, the flame Forest fires rapidly spreading over the slopes of Mount Hymettus near the Greek capital Athens, creating thick plumes of smoke that blanketed the southern suburbs.
To prevent loss of life, Greek civil protection authorities evacuated people from several areas of the Voula and Glyfada regions about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the center of Athens.
One witness saw at least two homes severely damaged by the fire.
Fire Department spokesman Yiannis Artopios said at a news conference: “Due to strong northerly winds, the fire quickly spread and reached the city.
“We ask people to be very careful,” added Mr. Artopios.
More than 130 firefighters were deployed with the support of six firefighting planes and four helicopters. These planes dropped tons of water in an attempt extinguish the forest fire broke out over the past 7 hours.
A series of wildfires burned about 300,000 acres of forest and bushland in different parts of Greece in the summer of 2021, amid the country’s worst heatwave in 30 years.
Greece has suffered severe damage related to a forest fire in 2018 that “torn” the seaside town of Mati near Athens, killing 102 people in a matter of hours.
