PXB patient (41 years old, residing in Doan Hung district, Phu Tho province) has had low back pain for many years. Recently, through the introduction of an acquaintance, the patient sought out a person who claimed to be capable of spinal injection treatment.

After the injection, the patient not only did not have pain relief, but the disease progressed gradually, the spine pain increased, pain spread to the back of the thigh, high fever 39.5 degrees Celsius.

The patient entered Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital in a state of severe infection, high fever, pneumonia, pleural effusion, and pain in the lumbar spine. Blood cultures showed bacteremia caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

After taking magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine, doctors discovered an annular tear and herniated disc L4-L5, L5-S1 with root compression.

After 2 days of active treatment, the patient’s fever was reduced, and the lumbar spine pain was relieved. Currently, the patient’s health is stable.

According to MSc.BSCKII Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, Head of the Internal Medicine Unit, requested that the above patient’s case is very dangerous because the infection from the spinal injection site spread through the bloodstream, causing severe pneumonia and bacteremia. Fortunately, the patient was detected early and treated in time, so his health was stable.

Through this, Dr. Giang recommends: When there are any health problems or signs of low back pain, we should visit a medical facility for proper diagnosis and treatment. This will help people avoid unfortunate complications that can happen like the one above.
