Baby girl born deaf, hears her mother’s call for the first time after 17 months of living in silence

According to statistics of the National Children’s Hospital, for every 1,000 babies born, 1-3 children are born deaf. This congenital defect seriously affects the children’s social activities, psycho-physiological development, especially the children’s future. Children with severe and profound deafness are often accompanied by muteness due to the inability to receive sounds, thereby affecting the language development process.

As the case of baby Minh Khue (17 months old) is a typical example who has been treated at the hospital. According to parents, the baby at birth still develops well, eats well, sleeps well. But when it came to the point that children of the same age knew how to “talk” eh, ah, .. or smile when hearing the sound of their parents calling, Minh Khue did not respond.

However, seeing that the child was still developing according to the standard “3 months to roll, 7 months to crawl, 9 months to learn to walk”, the parents did not doubt much, just thought that the child was slow to speak.

Only when the baby passed the threshold of 1 year old, the child’s scary silence made Ngoc Lan, the mother of the child, clearly feel that there was something wrong with her son, but most of the sisters still thought that he was slow to speak, not suspicious. child’s hearing. When her son was 15 months old, she took him to the National Children’s Hospital for examination. Examination results showed that the baby was profoundly deaf in both ears.

“Holding the results in my hand, my whole family was really shocked, I never thought that my child could be deaf because no one in my family has ever been like that… I feel very bewildered and worried for the future. of children”, Lan said sadly.

Then, when the baby was 16 months old, Lan decided to have Minh Khue undergo surgery to treat hearing loss and implant a cochlear implant as a ticket to save her hope and her child’s future.

Fortunately, nearly a month after surgery, I listened and received the first sounds. For normal children, this is simple, but for deaf children like Minh Khue, this is a miracle, a great joy that is difficult to describe in words.

“After 17 months of living in silence, from the moment I started hearing, I never wanted to take off the assist device, just wanted to wear it forever so I could hear all the sounds around me… At the moment I turned my head When I heard my mother calling, my heart burst with happiness, that moment I will never forget.” Ngoc Lan was moved to share.

Early signs of hearing loss in children

The signs of deafness in each child can be different and vary according to the degree of hearing loss. In essence, the warning signs can be fleeting and do not cause concern for parents. In this case, parents should contact their child’s doctor immediately if they notice any of the warning signs listed below.

1. Newborn up to 3 months old

By the time a baby is 3 months old, their hearing is quite complete and can hear normal sounds. If experiencing one of the following signs, parents need to take their child to a specialist doctor:

– Unresponsive to parents’ sounds, music or voices

– Not soothed by gentle sounds

– Does not move or wake up to voices or noises nearby when the baby sleeps in a quiet room after 2 months of age

– Doesn’t sound out vowels like “ohh” after 2 months old

– Don’t become quiet when hearing familiar voices

2. Children from 4 to 8 months old

– Has not started babbling alone or turned around when others talk to the child

– Don’t answer “no” and change the voice

– Only pay attention to the sounds that can be felt due to the creation of vibrations or the movement of objects.

– With noises that can only be heard, the child does not seem to have any reaction.

3. Children from 9 to 12 months old

– Do not turn quickly or point people directly in the direction of the small noise

– Do not answer the child’s name

– Do not change the child’s pitch when breathing.

– Doesn’t make a lot of different consonants when babbling (m, p, b, g, etc.)

– Does not respond to music by listening, playing, or singing along by the time the child is 1 year old

– Doesn’t say single words, like “da-da” and ma-ma” at 1 year old

– Do not pronounce many different consonants at the beginning of words

– Does not understand words for common objects such as shoes and hats, or does not understand simple commands given by parents such as “say goodbye”, “come over”

Children with hearing loss, if detected early and cared for in time, have a high chance of recovery, especially for children under 2 years old. Therefore, when seeing a child showing signs of hearing loss, parents should take the child to a reputable hospital and facility for hearing tests, thereby offering appropriate treatment methods.
