The rules are a bit more restrictive as you move further North like in Norway, Sweden and Poland. The UK, Ireland and Malta have the highest limit.

Different regulations also mean different penalties. In the US, violators are subject to a fine of up to $7,000, imprisonment for up to 6 months with community service as well as driving license revocation for up to 6 months. However, if the driver caused an accident that resulted in the death of the victim, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

China: Very heavy fines, can lead to jail time, 5 years of driving license revoked and if the accident leads to death, the driver may be sentenced to death. France: Fines of up to €150,000 and 10 years in prison plus license revocation.

Russia: Minimum fine of 120 €, imprisonment from 15 days to 9 years as well as 3 years license suspension. Japan: Fine up to 7,000 €, imprisonment for 5 years and withdrawal of driver’s license for life. Passengers boarding a car driven by a drunk driver also face a €2,500 fine.
