Facing a fuel crisis, the US may consider easing sanctions for Iran

According to Russian newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta, this move could happen even if a new agreement in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding Iran’s nuclear program has not been reached.

The reason the White House acted like this is most likely to control gas prices as well as protect the chances of Democrats in the congressional elections in November.

Until recently, there had not been any indication that Washington and Tehran would make unilateral concessions. Both governments have stressed that the other should take the necessary steps before considering a new deal.

And according to the Russian newspaper, the reason the White House may change its position is because the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has caused oil prices to skyrocket. Along with that, gas prices also increased. However, after more than 3 months of conflict, the JCPOA agreement has not made any progress. Right now, Iran’s economy needs money and the West needs an alternative source of oil.

Boris Sazhin, senior fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that although many changes have occurred since the end of February, the total number of sanctions against Russia has surpassed via Iran, but the parties have not yet been able to come up with a new JCPOA agreement, even though its text is 95% ready.

“Even without a new JCPOA deal, the US can ease sanctions pressure on its own. In particular, Iranian assets in South Korea and Iraq have been released with Washington’s consent.”this expert added.
