Sticking with many generations of Vietnamese families in the 80s and 90s, Cao Sao Vang was originally just a small aluminum box, round shape, with a yellow star printed in the middle of the lid and the box body covered with color. bright red. This item will be used when someone in the house has a headache, runny nose, sneezing, stomachache, sprain, motion sickness, insect bites. According to information from Nghe An newspaper, the father of this “small but powerful magic potion” is physician Pho Duc Thanh – an outstanding and unique character of Vinh city in the first half of the 20th century. He is well known. is a physician, businessman, journalist and social activist. He was a delegate to the People’s Council of Vinh city (1945 – 1947). In 2021, his name was decided by the Provincial People’s Council for a street in Vinh city.

Herbalist Pho Duc Thanh, alias Duy Khanh, was born in 1880 in Ninh Binh, originally from Hung Yen province. He was born into a poor family of grapes but belonged to a family with a tradition in oriental medicine. At first, he wandered around, went to Da Nang to work as Secretary of the Department of Luc Lo, then went back to Hue to work and run a small business with his wife.

In 1926, because he wanted to help his close cousin Pho Duc Chu, he went to Vinh, founded and worked as the manager of Vinh Hung Tuong oriental medicine pharmacy. Because Mr. Chu opened a shop selling traditional Chinese medicine in Hanoi but could not stand the competition and pressure of the Chinese in their own territory, which was Fujian Street, Hanoi (later renamed Lan Ong Street). Therefore, Mr. Thanh calculated to choose Trung Ky – where the Southeast medicine activities of the Chinese were not as strong as Tonkin and Cochinchina.

With this careful calculation, from a small pharmacy, Mr. Thanh bought the building of the Civil Court located right in front of Cho Vinh for headquarters, the area of 1200 m2 is not only enough space for business but also even opened the apothecary. In addition, Vinh Hung Tuong also leases and opens shops.

Pho Duc Thanh’s business motto is “buying from the root, selling to the top”, that is, he directly imports traditional Chinese medicine from Hong Kong and then moves to a facility in Hai Phong to solve all stages, at the same time open agents in many regions throughout the North, Central and South. In addition, Mr. Thanh is also a person who always keeps credibility with customers as well as cares about drug quality.

Before being a good businessman, Mr. Pho Duc Thanh was also a dedicated physician. Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Oriental Medicine Association, Doctor Nguyen Xuan Huong awarded the title to physician Pho Duc Thanh as “a patriotic intellectual, famous physician of the 20th century”. He has always been passionate about collecting, discovering and researching medicinal plants. In particular, he has researched many remedies and prepared some good medicines from Vietnamese herbs, in which there is a prominent “till oil” Vinh Hung Tuong, named “Van Ung”.

Initially, this medicine was just a water-based lotion, then it was made with a thickener, diversifying the product according to the season. Later, after working at the Ministry of Health, physician Pho Duc Thanh transferred the formula for processing Van Ung oil to the Central Pharmaceutical Enterprise 2. This medicine continued to be assigned by the State to the Pharmaceutical Enterprise. Central Pharmaceutical Company 3, now Central Pharmaceutical Company 3 (Hai Phong), research and manufacture. Since 1969, the product has been perfected and named Golden Star. However, there are also controversial opinions that Cao Sao Vang is produced based on the tick oil product, which is a white tiger brand of Singapore origin.

The ingredients of Cao Sao Vang currently include camphor, beeswax and precious essential oils of Vietnam, such as mint, cinnamon, melaleuca, and basil. Cao Sao Vang is indicated in cases of flu, headache, runny nose, nausea, abdominal pain, motion sickness, bitten by mosquitoes and other insects for external use for adults and children.
