According to Reuters news agency, Russia is intensify the war in the Donbass region in search of a decisive victory after more than 100 days of the start of a special military operation in Ukraine.
Severodonetsk has been the main target of Russia’s offensive in the Donbass – including the Lugansk and Donetsk regions – in recent times.
In a video address on the night of June 6, President Volodymyr Zelensky said “In the city, fierce street fighting is taking place. Russia is trying to deploy additional forces towards the Donbass.”
Mr. Zelensky acknowledged that the Russian forces were outnumbered and stronger in Severodonetsk. He called on Western countries to deliver weapons faster to Ukraine. The two sides are fighting in the streets of Severodonetsk and the situation changes hourly.
According to Zelensky, things could get very difficult for Ukraine if Russian forces break through the front lines in Donbass, where Severodonetsk is the main city that is not in Russian hands.
Although Russia has more troops in the city, Ukrainian forces have “every chance” to fight back, Zelensky said.
On June 6, Lugansk province governor Serhiy Gaidai said the situation had worsened after Ukrainian defense forces repelled the Russians over the weekend and took control of 50% of the city.
Meanwhile, Oleksandr Stryuk, the administrative head of Severodonetsk, said on television that it is not clear which side the upper hand is currently.
