The US and Russia need talks to ensure strategic nuclear stability.

Dmitry Peskov commented after US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan said talks on nuclear weapons between Washington and Moscow are unlikely to continue in the current situation.

Accordingly, in the interview with TASS Earlier, the US special envoy said he was not instructed by Washington to prepare for such negotiations. At the same time, Mr. John Sullivan stressed the importance of this issue for bilateral relations.

“It’s certainly not something I’ve been instructed by Washington to prepare for. On the other hand, it’s one of the most important issues between the US and Russia.” US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan said.

Mr. John Sullivan also recalled that the first thing when Joe Biden took office as US President was to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) for 5 years.

“The validity of the treaty is five years from February 5, 2021 to 2026. This treaty can also only be renewed once in five years and we have to do it now.

We are not currently engaged in negotiations… We discussed last year extending the treaty but those talks have not resumed since February 24.” American diplomat added.

The United States and Russia have established a hotline since Moscow launched a special military operation against Ukraine, with the aim of preventing miscalculation and the risk of expanding the conflict. This hotline is located at the headquarters of the US Command in Europe.
