Self-driving 122,000-ton gas tanker crosses the Pacific Ocean

The Prism Courage left Freeport, Texas on May 1, 2022, traveled through the Panama Canal and the Pacific Ocean to arrive at Boryeong LNG Terminal in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea, after a 33-day journey. In addition to processing GPS satellite navigation signals and ocean currents, the ship also has to read many parameters from sensors, decide to respond and comply with maritime laws along the way.

In the second half of the journey, the train runs under the control of the HiNAS 2.0 automatic navigation system. This system not only drives the train, but also finds the optimal route and best speed based on the artificial intelligence Integrated Smartship Solution (ISS) of Hyundai Global Service. The system provides navigation as well as a way to deal with weather and high waves, and avoids passing trains by steering in real time.

The HiNAS 2.0 system helps increase fuel efficiency by 7% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5%. In addition, the system locates and avoids other ships more than 100 times. During the entire voyage, the Prism Courage was tracked by the US Shipping Agency and the Korean Register to confirm the vessel’s performance and stability. Hyundai’s goal is to prepare to bring HiNAS 2.0 to the market next year after obtaining the license.

“Avikus’ auto-navigation technology was of great help in this transatlantic test, particularly in course maintenance, automatic navigation and avoidance of nearby ships. All of which increased convenience for sailors. crew,” said Captain Young-hoon Koh of Prism Courage.
