Thousands of Italian mafias are quietly operating in Australia

Australian police admit about 5,000 members of the Italian mafia have been hiding, laundering money and “rigging” other gangs in the country for decades.

At a press conference today, Deputy Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Nigel Ryan said there are a total of 51 Italian organized crime gangs operating in Australia, with a total of about 5,000 members.

14 of these tapes were confirmed by AFP to belong to ‘Ndrangheta, the notorious mafia organization from the Calabria region of Italy. Members of this mafia gang have hidden their identities in the community for decades and secretly carried out money laundering activities by running legitimate businesses.

“It’s quite possible that people are living next to the ‘Ndrangheta member without even knowing it,'” Ryan said. “They avoid falling into the eyes of the investigating authorities by living simply in modest houses and transferring their illegal wealth into construction and catering businesses.”

This mafia group is said to cooperate with other gangs to smuggle drugs, launder money and conduct violent activities.

‘Ndrangheta is also accused of “rigging the strings” of outlaw motorcycle gangs in Australia, which are notorious for violent incidents in the country.

According to Ryan, the ‘Ndrangheta gang is a global problem that needs to be addressed. “This organization is responsible for 70-80% of the world’s cocaine and is drowning Australia in illegal drugs,” he stressed.

AFP is working with Italian, US, Spanish and Brazilian authorities to disrupt its operations, financing and communication networks.
