Ukrainian workers cleaning up at the Chernobyl nuclear plant after the withdrawal of Russian troops unexpectedly found “high-quality vodka,” The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, June 6.

Russian forces occupied the Chernobyl nuclear plant on the first day when the Russian President announced the opening of a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24.

Ukraine later accused hundreds of workers at Chernobyl of being “in detention” while Russian forces took control of the area until they withdrew at the end of March.

“When the fighting broke out, the guards at the plant were ordered to withdraw because a huge Russian army was approaching,” said Julia Bezdizha, a spokeswoman for the Chernobyl plant. They retreat mainly because it is very dangerous to stay and the intense fighting can cause a heavy radiation leak.”

When controlling Chernobyl, Russian soldiers are said to have dug trenches and operated the plant without protective gear.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, radiation exposure can lead to various short- and long-term health effects – including acute radiation syndrome, cancer and depression. .

“We believe that very soon the Russians will feel the effects of radiation exposure. Some of them will feel it in a few months, some years later,” said Yevhen Kramarenko, said the head of the Ukrainian State Service for the Management of Exclusion Zones.

“But either way, all the Russian soldiers who were there will feel it at some point,” Kramarenko said.

In addition to leaving behind about 100 liters of high-quality vodka, the Russian military is also accused of leaving a large mess at the factory, according to The Journal. Ukrainian workers said they found smashed computer screens and spray-painted walls all over the factory.
