WWDC 2022: Apple officially launched the M2 chip

This is the 5th chip designed and built by Apple itself, after the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max and most recently M1 Ultra chips.

Like the first version of the M1 chip, the M2 still uses the custom ARM architecture, built on the 5 nm process. The new generation chip has more than 20 billion transistors, 25% more than the M1 chip. Increasing the number of transistors helps chip M2 has 18% faster processing speed and 35% stronger graphics processing capacity than the M1 chip generation.

According to Apple, the M2 chip is 1.9 times faster than the “latest generation 10-core laptop chip” while consuming only a quarter of the power. In terms of graphics processing, M2 is 2.3 times faster than the new generation 10-core chip with 1/5th power consumption.

Meanwhile, compared to the latest generation 12-core chip, M2 gives 87% performance while power consumption is only 1/4.

To make the M2 chip more powerful, Apple has combined high-performance cores and energy-efficient cores, increased cache capacity with 100 Gbps memory bandwidth, 50% increase in bandwidth compared to the M1 chip.

In terms of graphics processing capabilities, M2 is equipped with 10 graphics processing cores, an increase of more than 2 cores compared to the first generation of chips. Cache and graphics processing bandwidth have also been increased, helping to improve performance. According to Apple, the M2 chip has 35% stronger graphics processing capabilities than the M1 generation.

The M2 chip is also equipped with the latest multimedia engine, supporting 8K H.264 and HEVC video. This means that the system using the M2 chip can run multiple video streams with 4K and 8K resolutions at the same time.

It is expected that the new generation MacBook Air will be one of the first products equipped with Apple’s M2 chip. The device will be sold in July with a starting price of $ 1,199 for the lowest configuration version and $ 1,499 for the highest configuration option.
