Authorities of Dak Lak province have just discovered that a 9-year-old boy has a very dangerous Whitmore disease and is often referred to as a ‘flesh-eating bacteria’ disease.

This morning (June 8), information from the Department of Health of Dak Lak province said that a case of dangerous Whitmore disease has just been recorded. The baby with the disease is NT.TV (SN 2013), lives in Ia Lop commune, Ea Sup district.

According to V.’s mother, her child became ill about 10 days before being admitted to the hospital with symptoms of high fever, swelling, and pain in the parotid region on both sides.

The family took V. to a private clinic in Ea Sup district and was prescribed 3 days of medication. However, V.’s condition is getting worse and worse.

Because V.’s condition did not improve, on June 4, his family took him to be examined at the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital.

Immediately after that, V. was assigned to the hospital with a fever of 39 degrees Celsius. In addition, the parotid glands on both sides were swollen, the jaw angle had a soft point of pus, a lot of pain…

On June 7, V. had a high fever and continuous abscesses in 2 parotid glands, oozing pus and blood, and went to the toilet 5 times a day.

Test results showed that V. was positive for Burkholderia Pseudomallei bacteria. Diagnosis: Postoperative bilateral parotid abscess/bacteremia caused by Burkholderia Pseudomallei/ TD meningitis.

Whitmore’s disease, commonly known as “flesh-eating bacteria,” is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia Pseudomallei. Treatment is also extremely difficult and carries a high risk of death even with a correct diagnosis.

This is an infectious disease that is difficult to detect because it is easily confused with other diseases and if not treated promptly will lead to death.

Talking to Infonet, a CDC leader in Dak Lak said that this unit is sending people in to verify and investigate epidemiological factors and will notify the press after having specific results.

And Mr. Nguyen Thien Van – Secretary of the Ea Sup District Party Committee also confirmed the above information and said that the baby had the disease “flesh-eating bacteria” residing in Chieng village, Ia Lop commune. This disease is very rare in the world and is spread through the environment.

According to Mr. Van, the child had a fever and was transferred to a higher level. Initially, the disease was not detected and had to wait a few days to be detected.

“This afternoon, CDC Dak Lak will investigate epidemiological factors and the locality is waiting for instructions from CDC Dak Lak to have the next treatment plan,” Mr. Van said.

Mr. Doan Viet Thuan – Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ia Lop Commune said that he knew that V. was infected with man-eating bacteria and this morning sent medical forces down to his house to spray disinfectant and wait for comments. further instructions from superiors.
