In a statement issued on June 7, the Education Department of Ningbo University announced that it had fired an employee named Li because inappropriate comments had “caused serious consequences”.

Earlier, in a share on his personal Weibo account, Li said: “Women are inherently talkative. They like to use the so-called excuse to take care of the family and children. That’s why employers don’t want to hire women.”

“The core of the problem is that you shouldn’t force male co-workers to do extra work just because you need to take care of your family and children. You shouldn’t take it for granted, you should be ashamed of being in love. ask male colleagues to do the work for him”.

Li wrote these comments days before being fired. After these shares caused heated controversy on social media, Li apologized, explaining that they were just words that worked at a time when she felt depressed.

Ningbo University said that immediately after Li’s comments caused a stir, he was suspended from work. A day later, Li was fired.

Most of the comments on Chinese social media agree with Ningbo University’s “fast and concise” decision.

“I suggest he go to a place where there are no women to build an empire that proves himself,” another person requested.

China has recorded more cases of sexism, harassment and sexual assault since the #MeToo movement spread in the country a few years ago. In May 2021, Chinese internet giant NetEase fired a male manager over a sexist job advertisement.
