Death penalty for rapist, killer of 12-year-old girl

On June 8, the People’s Court of An Giang province sentenced defendant Tran Phuoc Tan (40 years old, from Cho Moi district) to death for the crime of Killing, 14 years in prison for the rape of a person under 16 years old. The total punishment the defendant must serve is the death penalty.

According to the indictment, in March 2021, Tan lived as husband and wife with Mrs. TTHT at an inn in An Hao commune, Tinh Bien district. On November 3, 2021, Tan drove a motorbike to take Mrs. T. to Phu Tan district.

Then, Tan went to the man’s house in the same neighborhood to drink. At that time, Tan knew that the 12-year-old girl was a neighbor’s daughter who wanted a smartphone, so she promised to buy it.

In the afternoon of the same day, Tan took the girl to the inn, then sexually assaulted her. The next morning, Tan continued to drive the girl to an acquaintance’s house to drink alcohol. At noon of the same day, Tan heard that the girl’s family was organizing a search, so he was afraid.

Tan had an intention to kill the girl, so he took it to Nui Ket area in Tinh Bien district. Tan tricked the girl into picking medicine, then strangled the victim, causing her death.

After committing the crime, Tan left the scene and was arrested by the police at the Chau Giang ferry terminal. During the investigation, Tan had a previous conviction for child rape.
