Fisherman seriously injured by shark

Quang NinhThe 32-year-old man was fishing in the waters of Bach Long Vi when he was attacked by a shark, biting his right leg, and after providing first aid, was transferred to the provincial general hospital.

Doctors of Quang Ninh Provincial General Hospital received the patient on the morning of June 8, assessed that this was a rare accident, the patient suffered many injuries, in which the right leg wound was about 20 cm long, exposing bones and muscles. crushed.

After X-ray, doppler vascular ultrasound assessed the damage of the right leg, the doctor determined that the patient had broken the entire dorsal muscle mass of the lower leg, broken fibula, many blood vessels, tendons, and nerves. The nerve is broken, the dorsal pulse cannot be caught, the leg is crushed and the ankle movement is lost.

Doctor Luong Toan Thang, Head of Orthopedic Department, said that this is a serious injury with a poor prognosis. “If emergency surgery is not timely treated, the patient is at risk of limb necrosis or infection, which is life-threatening,” the doctor said.

The surgical team removed the crushed area, sutured the artery and broken muscle blocks, braced the leg, and transfused more than two units of blood to actively resuscitate the patient. After surgery, the patient’s leg was pulsed, warm pink again, health progressed positively.

The doctor said that the patient was fortunate enough to receive good first aid from a lower-level medical facility, thus limiting severe injury and the risk of infection, and increasing the possibility of recovering movement later on.
