Hundreds charged with attack on Capitol Hill

More than 800 people across the United States have been charged in the January 6 riots on Capitol Hill, where the US Congress is located. This is the largest prosecution in the history of the US Department of Justice.

The leaders of the two groups have been arrested and are being held in custody pending a trial, which is expected to take place later this year. They were charged with conspiring to forcefully oppose the legal transfer of presidential power. This crime is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

So far, nearly 200 people have been convicted. Penalties range from probation to more than 5 years in prison. The person sentenced to the longest prison term, more than five years, was Robert Palmer of Largo, Florida, for throwing a wooden plank and spraying fire extinguishers at officers and then throwing the extinguisher at them.
