Sperm count increased significantly after weight loss

Scientists from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark followed 56 men between the ages of 18 and 65, with a body mass index (also known as BMI) between 32 and 43 – much higher than with a “healthy” range of 18.5 to 24.9. All case studies were put on a strict 800-calorie-per-day diet for two months.

At the end of the 8-week period, sperm count increased by 41% in men who lost at least 4 kg. Research has also shown that people who keep their weight off for at least a year double their sperm count, according to new research published in the journal Human Reproduction.

“It was surprising to us that significantly improved semen quality was associated with a reduction in semen quality,” said Signe Toékov, professor and obesity expert at the University of Copenhagen’s department of biomedical sciences. weigh .”

Reduce meat consumption, increase sperm

Torekov, who carried out the study with professor Romain Barès, of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, said: “This is the first long-term randomized study where we have shown that semen quality in obese men is significant. Obesity is improved with sustained weight loss.

Torekov went on to explain that men who lost an average of 16 kg experienced a 50% increase in sperm concentration and 40% of sperm count in the eight weeks following weight loss.

According to previous studies by the Mayo Clinic, the typical sperm count is any number greater than 15 million swims per milliliter of semen. Sperm quality in men has generally declined since the 1970s across Europe, North America and Australia.

Meanwhile, a separate study published earlier this year by the University of Worcester in the UK suggested that men who eat too much meat are at increased risk of infertility.

The high-protein diet reduced the men’s testosterone levels by 37%, and they were advised to eat less chicken, beef and lamb to boost sperm count.
