The CDC advises international travelers to “practice enhanced precautions” to avoid catching and spreading the rare viral illness.

After warnings from Europe about being subjective when treating monkeypox as a sexually transmitted disease in a certain community, the CDC confirmed there are many other routes of transmission to watch out for.

The agency advises people to avoid close contact with people who show signs of illness, including those with a “strange” rash on their skin or genitals; as well as avoiding contact with dead or living wildlife, especially rodents, such as mice and squirrels, and non-human primates, such as monkeys and apes.

In Africa – an endemic area for monkeypox – most cases occur from contact with wild animals.

People are also advised to avoid contact with items associated with sick people, such as clothing and bedding, or items that could potentially carry disease from animals; and avoid consuming or processing meat from wild animals.

If you are sick and may have monkeypox, delay traveling by public transportation until you are cleared by a healthcare professional or public health official, the CDC states. confirm”

According to the CDC, the risk of monkeypox in general remains low for the general public, but people should seek immediate medical attention if they develop new, unexplained skin rashes in anywhere on the body.

In monkeypox, skin lesions often progress through several stages, initially looking like discolored patches of skin, then emerging as vesicles, and finally as large, pus-filled blisters. These lesions eventually crust over and peel off. Other symptoms of monkeypox include fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and swollen lymph nodes.
