Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City: Continue to build Hoc Mon to the district

The above request was said by Secretary of the City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen when concluding the meeting with the Hoc Mon District Party Committee on the task of socio-economic development, on the morning of June 8. Previously, after assessing the local reality, the Standing Board of the District Party Committee agreed to build scheme orient Hoc Mon to a city directly under Ho Chi Minh City.

The head of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee assessed Hoc Mon’s proposal to orient the city before 2030 as “welcome and justifiable”. However, according to him, if they want to go far, go quickly, the locality needs to solve a series of outstanding problems before moving to a further stage.

“The district should continue to work under the project to build Hoc Mon into a district, and then how it develops, the city will calculate,” Mr. Nen said and asked this locality to step up administrative reform and build building a green – clean – beautiful neighborhood, developing tourism…

In the plan to turn districts into districts (or to cities in Ho Chi Minh City), based on population, area, socio-economic development, urban infrastructure…, Hoc Mon was ranked by the Department of Home Affairs. investors (reaching 22/30 criteria) in 5 districts want to go to a district or city, ranking behind Binh Chanh (26/30), Nha Be and Cu Chi (both 23/30), just above Can Gio (19/30) .

At the meeting, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Duong Anh Duc said that localities need to stick to the criteria to come up with a roadmap to raise the district to a district or city. This is to solve existing problems in the area, avoid early announcement but long time to go to the district or city. “The consequence is land price increase but people’s quality of life has not increased,” he said.

Previously, Deputy Secretary of Hoc Mon district Nguyen Anh Tuan proposed to the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee to approve the construction policy Investment project – building Hoc Mon district into a city directly under Ho Chi Minh City in the period of 2021-2030.

Hoc Mon leaders explained the orientation adjustment from district to city because there are many rural areas that cannot be transformed into urban areas. Going to the city also has easier criteria to meet than going to the county.

At the same time, the locality is rapidly urbanizing, the proportion of non-agricultural workers accounts for a high proportion in the labor structure with more than 94%. The economic structure of the district is shifting towards trade – services, industry, handicrafts and agriculture.

On the other hand, the natural conditions, population size and infrastructure, transportation, culture and education of the district are almost similar to neighboring districts such as 12, Go Vap and Binh Tan. This locality believes that the move to the city is in line with the general urban development trend of Ho Chi Minh City, oriented towards ecological, civilized and modern development in the Northwest.

Hoc Mon is a suburban district located at the northwest gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, with an area of ​​more than 109 km2 with nearly 600,000 inhabitants, including one town and 11 communes. Along with Hoc Mon, the remaining 4 suburban districts of Binh Chanh, Cu Chi, Can Gio and Nha Be also have an orientation to the city before 2030.
