“The director said I don’t look like musician Trinh Cong Son because it’s too expensive”

Samuel An, the actor who plays the main role in the movie “Guardian Angel” will reunite the audience in the movie “Em and Trinh”, with the character of poet – teacher Ngo Kha.

This is a prominent role in the movie. In the early 1970s, poet-teacher Ngo Kha was a close friend and influential person in Trinh Cong Son’s life. He is a brilliant man and an artist with a beautiful, romantic and emotional soul.

Samuel An had an exchange with Vietnamese people about this role!

How do you feel when you accept the role of poet – teacher Ngo Kha?

– I consider myself lucky because I’ve acted in two movies, and I have participated in big movie projects. Knowing that I have the opportunity to transform into a new character image, recreating a real character in the past makes me have a new feeling, completely different from my previous role. I am happy because the two characters in the first two movies I participated in have weight, story and fate in the movie.

What is the biggest motivation for you to participate in the casting of the movie “Em and Trinh”?

– The very name of the late musician Trinh Cong Son and the great musical legacy he left behind for the next generation is more than enough for me to want to participate in this film project. I always choose the film projects that I participate in, but obviously the film project about Uncle Trinh’s life was enough to convince me from the first moment.

Heard you originally cast for the role of musician Trinh Cong Son?

– That’s right, the time I went to casting for the movie “Em and Trinh” was also when I was preparing for the project “Guardian Angel”. When I was casting for the role of Trinh, holding a guitar and singing, I was jokingly told by director Phan Gia Nhat Linh that I didn’t feel like Uncle Trinh because…laugh).

Then, I was surprised and broke when I learned that the writer and director had molded a new role that was not in the original script for me. Along with that is the pressure put on because the role of Ngo Kha was not announced to be casting, and I can’t imagine what kind of person that character is. Knowing that this character has a close relationship and has a great influence on Uncle Trinh’s life is really stressful.

Fortunately, during the process of researching and preparing for the role of Ngo Kha, I had the opportunity to know that he is an almost perfect person. Actually, this is a character I really like, it can be said that I will live my life with myself.

What kind of film projects will appeal to you?

– From the first days when I started my career, my criteria for choosing screenplays have remained unchanged. The character’s inner element and attraction are put on top, then it’s the turn to consider who the film director – producer – team is, raising the question of whether the film can be completed in the best way. or not… just accepted. Personally, I always want to challenge myself in difficult roles, diverse in personality, appearance and voice.

In the near future, I will also appear on a TV series that I spent more than 5 months in Hanoi filming. Hopefully, my projects this year will be well received by the public.

“Em and Trinh” is a biographical film inspired by the vibrant, passionate and romantic youth journey of the late musician Trinh Cong Son, directed by Phan Gia Nhat Linh. The film will be shown nationwide from June 17, 2022.
