The patient male organ donor, 33 years old, residing in Hue, unfortunately suffered from a serious illness, was in deep coma, and was on ventilator support… his condition was very serious, with a prognosis of death.

July 31, 2001 is a milestone marking the 21-year organ transplant journey of Hue Central Hospital since the first kidney transplant from a mother donating to her son, both mother and child are still living and working normally. Usually healthy.

Since then, the Hospital has performed more than 1200 kidney transplants, but the source of donated organs is still from living donors.

GS. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep – Director of Hue Central Hospital said that what worries doctors and nurses is when daily witnessing the unfortunate fate of diseases, traffic accidents …. insurmountable; As a doctor, he very much wishes that before returning to the dust, a part of their body can be regenerated again in the unfortunate people with organ failure that need a transplant from a brain-dead donor.

“But what makes us sad and tormented is that we have failed to mobilize the family of the brain-dead donor, because of the concept from many generations of people in the Central region. Each time, the National Center for Organ Transplantation informs us. Reported a brain death case of organ donation from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City… giving the heart back to Hue, the process of receiving organ coordination is really a tough battle in terms of time, space and human resources of the whole system. The health system, the police, the airlines; going through such times, we are more and more worried about why we can’t do it in the Central region, we are still persistent and undaunted…”

And on June 3, 2022, the Organ Transplantation Coordination Department – Hue Central Hospital received the request of organ donation from the family of the patient being treated at the Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation B. The 33-year-old male patient, residing at the hospital. Hue, unfortunately, has a serious illness, is in a deep coma, and is on ventilator support… the condition is very serious, and the prognosis for death is severe.

Under the direction of GS. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, the doctors did their best to actively treat, monitor and evaluate the patient’s condition. However, the patient’s clinical course did not change during resuscitation. Immediately after, the Hospital’s Brain Death Evaluation Council conducted tests and clinical evaluation to determine that the patient was brain dead on June 4, 2022.

The first person in the Central region to donate a kidney to save 2 people, bypassing the barrier of
The medical team of Hue Central Hospital said goodbye to the organ donor.

It is known that the patient’s cousin is also one of the end-stage chronic renal failure patients undergoing routine dialysis at the hospital and waiting for the opportunity to receive a kidney transplant. Understanding the wishes of patients who need a kidney transplant, the family is willing to donate a kidney to save the life of their brother and other patients.

The Hospital’s Kidney Transplant Committee met to select a kidney recipient on the transplant waiting list and with the right index.

At exactly 13:30 on June 5, 2022, the kidney transplant surgery for 2 recipients took place at the same time, the recipient’s health was stable. At the same time, the medical team was preparing to bring the donor back to his parents and family. At the moment of farewell, everyone was choked with emotion and grateful for the heart and open thoughts of the donor’s family, which overcame the barrier of the people’s concept of “dead body” of the people in the Central region.

This is the first case of organ donation after brain death in Hue and the central region, which has cleared away concerns during the past 21 years. It is hoped that the great gesture of the donor family will contribute to changing the view and perspective on organ donation after death so that more organ failure patients can be saved. Only when everyone changes their mind will they strongly spread the goodwill and ignite the fire of kindness that is always in the subconscious of each of us Vietnamese.
