Testosterone, the reproductive hormone found in higher concentrations in men, is a potential factor in job retention and success, according to a new study published in the journal Economics & Human Biology. male .

A UK health survey of more than 2,200 men between the ages of 25 and 64 found that higher testosterone levels in men correlated with a reduced risk of being fired and shorter periods of unemployment than with men with lower testosterone levels.

The researchers found that unemployed men with moderate to high testosterone levels were more likely than those with low testosterone to find a job after 5 months.

Study author Peter Eibich, deputy head of the research group on working demographics, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, said: “Our results suggest that British men with higher testosterone levels are less likely to be unemployed and they are less likely to be unemployed.

This may be due to differences in personality traits and behaviors caused by testosterone. For example, we found that men with higher testosterone levels were more confident and they were more likely to use the Internet to look for work.

The economic researcher said his team was interested in how biological markers (such as testosterone levels) relate to social and economic outcomes.

“Testosterone is a particularly interesting case in point – previous research has shown quite clearly that testosterone levels are associated with certain personality traits (e.g. risk aversion) and behavior,” says Eibich. individuals (eg, status-seeking and domination behaviors). Such personality and behavioral traits have been previously associated with an individual’s success in the labor market. ”

Eibich says their findings are limited by the fact testosterone levels are taken “at a single point in time” and would benefit from more frequent surveys of participants to get sense of their individual hormonal fluctuations.

This study did not look at reproductive hormones in women. Eibich added: “It will be interesting to look at the effects of testosterone on women. However, our study only included men because most women’s testosterone levels are below the detectable threshold.”
