Usually, the disease has no obvious symptoms. Therefore, although the disease is common, it is estimated that 80% of infected people do not know they have the disease. Genital inflammation is caused by the sexually transmitted virus Herpes simplex, which causes common sores. Genital HSV can be caused by strains of HSV-1 or HSV-2. These are two of the eight types of herpes that cause infections in humans. If infected with HSV type 1 (HSV-1), it is usually located in the lips, gums, cheeks, palate, lower throat, nose, and eyes. In contrast, infection with HSV type 2 (HSV-2) causes disease in the genital organs such as: glans, penis shaft, scrotum (in men); vulva, vagina (in females). In addition, HSV-2 also causes disease in the anus and rectum in both sexes.

Herpes virus is transmitted from person to person through oral contact, saliva, sex, mother transmits to her baby during pregnancy, during the perinatal period. More worrisome, women who transmit HSV to their infants have no symptoms of HSV infection at the time of birth.
