Yakuza bosses are “miserable” because they can’t use new phones

Japanese crime bosses are being harassed by the country’s telecom giants.

Many people mistakenly believe that the Yakuza factions often face payments and scramble for territory. Behind those wars is the period when the bosses balance, enjoying luxurious parties as well as advanced electronic equipment. However, this is a completely wrong concept in this day and age.

The three leading Japanese telecommunications companies such as Au, SoftBank and Docomo are ready to abandon the 3G connection standard. This is almost a death sentence for Garakei (common phone) phones in Japan. So what effect does this have on members of the Yakuza?

In today’s Japanese society, the Yakuza has almost no place when it comes to constantly receiving restrictions set by the government. Typically, the Ordinance Boryokudan Haijo Jorei (ordinance to eliminate organized crime) has a nationwide scale.

This ordinance significantly affects the business of the Yakuza, as it is restricted from working with domestic companies.

Since 2011, carriers have also required customers before signing a contract to swear that they are not a member of gangs, so as not to be held responsible if their customers are criminals.

In Japan, phones are sold by carrier, so it will only work with their sim. If the phone is carrier-locked, it won’t work in Japan. Therefore, buying a used phone in Japan is not difficult, the difficult thing is to be able to use it.

Used phones can be bought easily but the new SIM card is the problem.

In 2020, Hokkaido police arrested a 46-year-old yakuza member for fraud, because he signed a cell phone contract in 2018 that included a clause stating he was not a member of the group.

A similar incident also happened in 2019, a Yakuza member was arrested, when signing a similar contract to take a part-time job at a post office.

Yakuza members still get to use the older service when sticking to contracts they signed before 2011. That’s why you’ll rarely see an older Yakuza member using a smartphone. Younger members can “circumvent the law” by signing contracts with network operators before joining the gangs.
