About 200 McDonald’s restaurants will open in Russia with new names

“We plan to launch in batches, expecting to open quite a few branches by the end of June. We will have a ‘new wave’ on June 13,” TASS quoted Paroev as saying.

According to Mr. Paroev, “by the end of June, we will definitely open about 200 branches across the country, if successful, even more.”

Previously, it was reported that the first 15 new McDonald’s stores will open in Moscow and the Moscow region on June 12.

The day before, the new McDonald’s had submitted two applications for logos in three colors: green, orange and red. The application states that the company plans to produce a variety of meat, poultry, fish and other beverages, as well as provide catering services.

In addition, the company will manufacture printed products, including paper boxes and cardboard packaging. McDonald’s intends to manufacture umbrellas, backpacks, bags, clothing and toys.

On March 14, McDonald’s, an American fast food chain in Russia, decided to close all of its nearly 850 stores in Russia because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Then, on May 16, McDonald’s announced its withdrawal from Russia, and through the intermediary of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, sold the business to a Russian owner, oil businessman Alexander Govor.

According to McDonald’s explanation, the conflict in Ukraine and the unpredictable business environment show that continuing to operate in Russia is “no longer stable and suitable for this brand”.

In Russia, McDonald’s directly manages more than 80% of its branded restaurants, and this Eastern European market accounts for 9% and 3% of McDonald’s sales and operating profits, respectively.

In its latest quarterly financial report, McDonald’s said that closing restaurants in Russia cost them $127 million. Of that, nearly $27 million comes from staff costs, space rent and supplier payments, and about $100 million comes from food and other goods that have to be thrown away.

McDonald’s currently has 39,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. This business has invested billions of dollars in business in Russia since January 1990. When McDonald’s opened its first restaurant in Moscow in 1990, Russians welcomed McDonald’s with as much enthusiasm as they welcomed the famous band The Beatles.

On the first day of sales, customers lined up outside despite the cold of February weather, they waited for 4 hours to enter the restaurant, about 30,000 people came to the restaurant on the opening day.
