Baidu’s sub-brand launches a comprehensive self-driving electric vehicle for the first time

Baidu’s electric car was born in the context of technology corporations around the world racing to develop electric vehicles.

Jidu Auto, the electric vehicle (EV) brand of Baidu launched a concept car with a “robot” concept on Wednesday (June 8). This model called ROBO-01 does not have a door handle, users can control it completely through voice recognition.

This futuristic electric vehicle was launched at the online Metaverse event through Baidu’s Xirang platform.

The Jidu brand, run by Baidu and sponsored by Chinese automaker Geely, plans to mass produce the model by 2023, with a 90% resemblance to the concept.

ROBO-01 possesses Level 4 autonomous capability (no human intervention required), along with Qualcomm’s 8295 chip, users can give voice commands even when offline.

Besides equipping the car with automatic driving software technology provided by Baidu, Jidu will also equip 2 Lidar sensors and a 12-camera system on the vehicle. Lidar sensors have a similar function to radar, based on laser light.

Joe Xia Yiping, CEO of Jidu said: “Robocar Jidu was born to meet users’ needs for smart travel, realizing a completely driverless traffic experience.”

Jidu’s electric vehicles will be manufactured in Hangzhou Bay, Ningbo, eastern China. The company hired Frank Wu, a former Cadillac designer, as head of design, and Wang Weibao, a former member of Apple’s Titan EV project, as head of intelligent driving.

Baidu CEO Robin Li said the Jidu electric car will cost from 200,000 yuan (equivalent to 30,000 USD).
