The J-7 is a Chinese-built fighter based on the Soviet MiG-21 prototype. In the early 50s, the Mig-21 was the world’s leading fighter aircraft, at that time China’s aircraft manufacturing industry was just zero. In the early 1960s, when the Soviet Union massively aided the army. China and the Soviet Union signed an agreement allowing China to produce Mig-21 fighter aircraft and R-11F-300 engine for the Allies to increase the strength of the Socialist bloc. according to the technological chain provided by the Soviet Union. China first identified this aircraft type 62, until February 1964, the name J-7 was officially identified and exists to this day.

The J-7 was built by all three famous Chinese aircraft factories at that time, Chengdu, Shenyang and Guizhou.

J-7 is a single-seat aircraft, length 15.75m, wingspan 7.15m, height 4.1m; Unladen weight 5,275 tons, normal take-off 7.4 tons, maximum take-off 8,655 tons (weapon weight 500kg). It can fly at an altitude of 18km (when the auxiliary oil tank is thrown, it can be up to 19.8km); maximum cruise of 1400km (without extra oil tank), ability to fly continuously for 1.47h, combat radius of 600km with a maximum speed of Mach2, patrol speed of 950km/h. J-7 is equipped with an HP30 cannon (30mm caliber) and K-13 air-to-air missiles.

Having served in the Chinese military for decades, the J-7 is considered to have low technology compared to today’s new generations of fighter aircraft, and the navigation and control equipment are all more outdated, so the danger is not high. The chance of an accident is also higher.
