Chinese netizens accuse Apple of “faking” Xiaomi, calling for a boycott

At the WWDC 2022 event for global developers just held on June 6, Apple introduced a new version of the iOS 16 operating system with many changes. Notably, among the interface changes, iOS 16 allows users to customize and personalize the lock screen with different wallpapers, fonts, widgets and effects.

However, among the above changes, there is a feature that many users think is quite similar to another feature on Xiaomi phones.

Specifically, the feature mentioned here is a globe-shaped lock screen. Accordingly, iOS 16 provides a set of Earth wallpapers. This wallpaper will gradually enlarge the Earth according to the animation of the bottom swipe unlocking action. Xiaomi users then voiced that iOS 16 “imitates” the Super Wallpaper feature on Xiaomi’s MIUI.

The Super Wallpaper feature, or Super Wallpaper, was first introduced by Xiaomi on the MIUI 12 version released in April 2020. With Super Wallpaper, users will experience a unique unlocking effect, combined with the feature. With the Always on Display feature and unlocking animations, MIUI will take users from a planet-wide interface to a detailed area on that planet. MIUI provides a lot of Super Wallpapers, including Earth, Mars, Saturn … Each wallpaper will have different moving effects.

We can see a similarity between the lock screen on iOS 16 and the Super Wallpaper on MIUI. However, that alone is not enough to conclude whether iOS “copy” this lock screen feature on MIUI or not.

Many mixed opinions are being shared on the Chinese social network Weibo. Many people believe that Apple has “blatantly copied” Xiaomi, but there are also people who think that this is just a coincidence and that Xiaomi is in fact the one who “copy” Apple.

For a long time, Xiaomi has been considered the Apple of China, and CEO and founder of Xiaomi, Mr. Lei Jun, is considered the Steve Jobs of China. Many of its products have similarities with Apple products, such as Xiaomi Mi 4 with the same design as the iPhone 4, Xiaomi Mi 8 with the same design as the iPhone X with a “rabbit ears” screen.
