Efforts to “universal swimming” to prevent drowning when children are on summer vacation

Only at the beginning of summer, in many localities across the country, there were consecutive cases of children drowning, leaving great losses to their families as well as the whole society. In fact, in Vietnam, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 15, which is among the highest in Asia. This situation requires sectors at all levels and especially each family, to raise their awareness of equipping drowning prevention skills, especially about universalizing swimming for children.

Bac Binh district, Binh Thuan province has 21,000 students at primary and secondary levels. However, this area only has 3 swimming pools. Therefore, rivers, lakes or beaches are often the choice of many children. The freedom to run and jump and the lack of adult supervision makes it difficult to respond in time when an incident occurs.

The goal by 2025 is to reduce child drowning deaths by 10%, 60% of children aged 6-16 years old to be taught safety skills, 50% of children to be taught safety skills. Learn to swim safely.

Good news for many children in the sea in Hoa Thang commune, Bac Binh district, Binh Thuan, a private swimming pool has just been opened. Although it is only 50m2, the students in the commune have a safe place to struggle this summer.
