Malaysia ended the 2022 Asian U23 group stage with three defeats, scoring one and conceding nine goals. They played short of players against Vietnam throughout the second half with defender Hairiey Hakim’s red card at the end of the first half. Although not once finishing the goal, Malaysia still only suffered a two-goal defeat, while in the first two matches, Brad Maloney’s army all lost three goals by a difference.

Therefore, in the analysis “Vietnam hurt the young tigers again” on Astro Awanithe author wrote: “Despite being 0-2 and only 10 men left, Malaysia deserves praise for not letting the 2018 runner-up score more goals in the second half.”

Newspaper Semuanya BOLA also praised goalkeeper Firdaus Irman. Reporter Al-Zaim Arzaman said: “Vietnam approaches the game with a physical style of play. Malaysia rarely attacks, and only creates opportunities from long-range shots that are not dangerous. Goalkeeper Firdaus Irman is the hero with many saves, helping the home team avoid a bigger defeat”.

This match, Malaysia only held the ball 23%, launched six shots but never hit the target. Vietnam finished 21 times and six on target, alongside 625 passes – three more than Malaysia. The team scored two goals in the first half thanks to Nham Manh Dung and Bui Hoang Viet Anh.

Although Malaysia was eliminated, coach Maloney was still optimistic when the team learned from experience. He pointed out that up to 15 players are currently old enough to compete in the 2024 Asian U23, which is also the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier.

This is the second victory of Vietnam in the history of the AFC U23 Championship, if counted in two main innings. The first match was when the team beat Australia 1-0 in the group stage in 2018, thanks to a goal from Nguyen Quang Hai. But this is also the second time Vietnam has passed the group stage.

Gong Oh-kyun and his students will meet Japan, Saudi Arabia or the UAE in the quarterfinals.
