Russia announced on June 7 that it had captured large swaths of eastern Ukraine after a relentless offensive that lasted weeks and prompted the recent deployment of additional troops.

Currently, Moscow’s forces are fighting for control of an industrial area on the outskirts of Sievierodonetsk and several nearby towns after capturing the city’s central residential areas.

Sievierodonetsk, the administrative center of the Luhansk region, has recently become a fierce battleground when the Russian army is said to have “spent all its strength” to attack this city.

Sievierodonetsk and nearby Lysychansk are the only two Donbass cities where Ukrainian troops are still fighting Russian forces.

General Shoigu added that the Russian army is attacking the town of Popasna and noted that they have taken control of Lyman and Sviatohirsk as well as 15 other towns in the region.

Popasna was a town with a pre-conflict population of 20,000, located about 30 km south of Sievierodonetsk.

Shoigu said 6,489 Ukrainian soldiers have been taken prisoner since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine, including 126 in the past five days.

A Ukrainian official said on June 7 that Moscow is deploying reinforcements in eastern Ukraine while it is deploying artillery to destroy Ukraine’s defenses.
