Causes of Puberty Voice Disorders

The thicker and longer the vocal cords, the lower the frequency will be. In children, the length of the vocal cords in both sexes is about 2 mm. Children’s voices have a high fundamental frequency value of about 300 Hz.
A child’s voice characteristics will change with physical changes during puberty. The female vocal cords will be about 0.4 mm long in a year and the male vocal cords 0.7 mm. Structural differences in the vocal cords in males and females contribute to their vocal differences. The female voice has a frequency of about 210 Hz, while the male voice has a lower frequency of about 120 Hz. The difference in the value of the frequency gives us the impression of a female voice or a male voice.

Causes can be hearing problems and vocal cord paralysis, structural problems such as vocal cord nodules or vocal cord polyps. Voice disorders can also be related to psychological problems such as confusion, anxiety about changes in puberty. At this time, men tend to maintain their former high-pitched voices despite undergoing physiological changes.
For an accurate test, men need to be examined by an otolaryngologist and evaluated for any structural abnormalities of the vocal cords. They can be further evaluated with linguists. From there, the doctor will make appropriate treatment indications such as voice therapy or surgery if necessary.
