In the final round of the 2013 Asian U23 tournament taking place in Oman, U23 Vietnam did not have tickets to attend. At the 2016 tournament in Qatar, U23 Vietnam was in Group D. After 3 matches, the “Golden Star Warriors” lost in turn to U23 Jordan (1-3), U23 Australia (0-2), U23 UAE ( 2-3) and finished last in the table.

At the 2018 Asian U23 tournament in China, U23 Vietnam surprised when it reached the final. In the group stage, coach Park Hang-seo’s students were in Group D. They respectively lost 1-2 to U23 Korea, won U23 Australia 1-0, drew U23 Syria 0-0.

In the quarterfinals, U23 Vietnam drew 3-3 (1-1 after 90 minutes) with U23 Iraq after 120 minutes of play before defeating the West Asian opponent with a 5-3 result on a penalty shoot-out. In the semi-finals, Nguyen Quang Hai and his teammates drew 2-2 (2-2 after 90 minutes) with U23 Qatar after 120 minutes. On the penalty shootout, U23 Vietnam won 4-3. In the final, the team led by Mr. Park lost 1-2 (1-1 after 90 minutes) against U23 Uzbekistan after 120 minutes.

In 2020, U23 Vietnam is also in Group D and is at the bottom of the table. In the opening match, we drew 0-0 against U23 UAE. After that, continued to draw 0-0 against Jordan U23 and lost 1-2 against U23 North Korea.

This year, U23 Vietnam for the second time passed the group stage with 5 points after 3 matches (won 1, drew 2 matches), 2 points behind the top team U23 Korea. Coach Gong Oh-kyun’s students have to wait for the last two matches in Group D today to determine their opponent in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Asian U23 Championship.

Thus, up to this point, U23 Vietnam has played a total of 15 matches in the history of the final round of the Asian U23 Championship. If only in 90 minutes, we only have 2 wins, 8 draws and 5 losses.
