European MPs on June 8 voted to adopt the European Union’s Climate Plan, with a focus on banning the sale of all fossil-fuelled cars from 2035. with the ambition to turn Europe into a carbon-free continent by the middle of the 21st century.

Meeting in a plenary session in Strasbourg on June 8, European MPs discussed eight proposals submitted by the European Commission in July 2021 with the goal of reducing 55% by 2030. emissions of carbon dioxide in the European Union, and voted to adopt one of the most controversial proposals to ban all cars powered by internal combustion engines, i.e. fossil fuels such as fossil fuels. gasoline and oil from 2035.

According to a decision approved by the European Parliament, from now until 2030, the European Union countries will have to cut 50% of the number of cars running on gasoline and oil and by 2035 will ban them altogether. Until then, only electric cars will be allowed to operate.

Despite huge opposition from the European People’s Party (PPE), the largest force in the European Parliament, the passage of this proposal by European MPs is considered a historic event. history.

According to economic experts, the ban on all petrol and diesel cars from 2035 will force European car manufacturers to make revolutions in the field of electric car manufacturing. These are major changes in the economic models of countries, because the European auto industry employs tens of millions of workers directly and indirectly in countries, along with thousands of sub-industries. aid.

However, many experts also believe that this decision of the European Parliament is not surprising because the trend of using electric vehicles has grown very strongly in Europe in the past few years. Only in the first 5 months of 2022, there were over 365 thousand electric cars registered in Western European countries, accounting for 8% of the total number of cars in circulation and equivalent to the sales of the whole of 2019.

Speaking at the European Parliament, Vice President of the European Commission and the EU’s environmental policy officer Frans Timmermans said that the energy transition in Europe is an urgent issue. , especially in the current context when Europe faces major energy challenges caused by the war in Ukraine.

“What we need to do is make energy conversion a reality. The war in Ukraine reinforces the importance of making this transition as quickly as possible. The money spent on renewables will stay in Europe. This is the reality that sets the urgency to take urgent measures like now,” said Frans Timmermans.
