Good children are more prone to depression

Every year, at the end of the school year, with the final graduation exams, the entrance exams for all levels, the number of children with mental symptoms who go for re-examination increases. The manifestations of children with mental problems are also extremely diverse and rich, if not observed carefully, it will be difficult to recognize.

Typically the case of female student TH (17 years old, in Hanoi), even though she was preparing for the high school graduation exam, she could not concentrate. H’s family said that in the past, he was an all-round good student, even being chosen to take the city-level exam. Starting from the 2nd semester of 11th grade, H showed unusual symptoms such as not being able to control her emotions, not focusing on studying, and a marked decrease in academic strength.

H insists that he has never been in a love relationship. In particular, during this period, many scratches and bruises appeared on H’s body. When asked, H said that those injuries were caused by hurting herself.

“I always feel pressured, don’t know what to study much for. That’s why I’m not interested in studying, in my head I always have to struggle between trying to study well and what to study for”, H confided.

Along with that, the family side always gives the goals that H must complete, especially the upcoming university entrance exam. All of that, makes H feel pressured and stressed. At such times, H pinched and hurt himself to find comfort. Recently, the family discovered abnormalities, so they took H to the Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital for examination and treatment.

Doctor Tam is examining a male student hospitalized because of pressure to study and take exams.

TS.BS Duong Minh Tam, Head of Stress Disorders Department, Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital, said that stress and depression are most common at the age of 14 and 17, this is the time when students take the exam to move up. high school and university.

It is worth noting that stress is more common in well-behaved and well-educated children. From the actual treatment, Dr. Tam shared, most of the children who come for examination and treatment for depression and stress come from specialized schools and selected classes. Good children who have high achievements in school often have more self-pressure than children who are busy playing.

Children often feel pressured about their position in school and their image in the eyes of their families and teachers. The daily routine of living and thinking more responsibly makes children have to make constant efforts. These children are often stressed and stressed, especially when expectations are not met. This shows that pressure from study, family, achievement pressure is one of the causes leading to stress in school age.

According to Dr. Tam, most of the students suffer from chronic stress, the stress process has been happening silently about 3-5 years ago and the exam pressure is just “the last drop of water”. Psychological development and personality changes of students coincide with puberty, so many parents implicitly accept that change. It is only when children have behaviors that hurt themselves or are too abnormal that parents can identify and take the child to the hospital, often the child is already in a stage of severe depression and stress.

The 5 R’s rule helps reduce stress

Dr. Tam said that stress often happens very quietly, but when children have the following behaviors, parents should be concerned:

– The first is self-destructive behavior (cuts on forearms or thighs, biting nails, clicking on fingertips…). This self-injury is a way to relieve a child’s emotional turmoil.

– There are abnormal behaviors, contrary to the previous personality such as the child becoming aggressive, rebellious or overly compliant, having a disorder in eating behavior such as eating too little or too much, having a disorder sleep such as sleeping too much or too little, boredom, decreased connection to society…

– There are forms of physical stress such as children with abdominal pain, headache, stomach pain, gastrointestinal bleeding… These pains often appear when children are preparing to enter exams or before important events. Once the event is over, the pain subsides.

Chronic stress can lead to serious health problems if not handled appropriately. It can weaken the body’s immune system, leading to a number of mental and physical illnesses such as depression and cardiovascular diseases.

To cope with this situation, families can refer to the 5 R’s. Specifically:

– Recognition: Identify causes and sources of stress, educate and raise awareness, to help children overcome and adapt to stress

Relationship: Seeking help, support, and reassurance from relationships.

Removal: Removes stressors and triggers.

Relaxation: Relaxation through techniques such as meditation, massage, breathing exercises, etc.

– Re-engagement: Re-engagement through managed re-exposure and desensitization.

Besides the 5 Rs, a simple, easy-to-implement factor is to support sleep control for children. “Sleep is essential for physical and mental health. Children between 6 and 12 years old should sleep 9 to 12 hours a night. Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours per night. Sleep is a factor that needs to be prioritized to manage stress,” emphasized Dr.

For children with weak personalities, romantics, writers and artists, closed personalities or lack of will, lack of energy, shyness, low self-esteem, guilt, lack of restraint, explosiveness, conflicts are often prone to stress than children with strong personality. Therefore, families should build for children an environment of emulation, striving, mutual support and progress together. This helps children cope better with stress. In addition, exercise and physical activity also help reduce the stress needed for children in particular and all ages in general.
