The US bans investors from buying Russian shares on the secondary market

A spokesman for the US Treasury Department stated that Americans are not allowed to make new investments in the financial sector of the US Russiaincluding transactions on the secondary market.

Even though Washington has imposed a series of sanctions on Moscow in recent months, Americans are still allowed to trade hundreds of billions of dollars worth of assets that have circulated on the secondary market.

The ban is extended to apply to all Russian debt as well as shares of all Russian companies, not just those specifically named in the sanctions.

The new rule still allows US investors to sell or continue to hold Russian assets they already own.

Western funds have massively dumped Russian assets since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine broke out in February.

According to Morgan Stanley, Russian corporate and government debt in the international market has grown to more than $472 billion by early 2022.

While the total capitalization of Moscow’s main stock market is now around 35 trillion rubles ($588.24 billion), down from more than 50 trillion rubles in January.
