U23 Vietnam set a record, affirming the No. 1 position in Southeast Asia

Particularly in the Asian U23 arena, U23 Vietnam demonstrate the bravery of the “big brother” of Southeast Asia. After the senior generation made the feat of being the continental runner-up in 2018, Bui Hoang Viet Anh and his teammates have just made an impression that no other team in the region has ever made.

U23 Vietnam finished the group stage U23 Asia 2022 with an undefeated record, drawing U23 Thailand, U23 Korea before defeating U23 Malaysia. After participating in 4 times (from 2016 to now), this is the first time that U23 Vietnam has passed the group stage in this arena without losing a match. Teacher and coach Gong Oh-kyun is the Southeast Asian team with the best record in history in the Asian U23 group stage.

U23 Vietnam won the right to the quarter-finals of U23 Asia 2022.

More broadly in all previous continental competitions, only twice the representatives of Vietnamese football achieve similar results. Those are Vietnam U19 under coach Hoang Anh Tuan (1 win, 2 draw, 5 points) at the 2016 Asian U19 tournament and the Vietnam Olympic team at ASIAD 18 (2 wins, 1 draw, 7 points).

The achievements of teachers and coach Gong Oh-kyun once again confirm the number one position in Southeast Asia of Vietnamese football at the U23 level in 2022. Although not as appreciated as the senior players, U23 Vietnam Men with the current force still won the Southeast Asian championship, won the gold medal in men’s football at the 31st SEA Games before stepping out on the continental playground.

At the 2022 Asian U23 final round, Southeast Asia has 3 representatives: U23 Vietnam, U23 Thailand, U23 Malaysia (in addition, U23 Australia on paper is also a member of the Southeast Asian Football Federation – AFF but rarely participate in regional tournaments). U23 Vietnam continues to be unbeaten against rivals in the same region, eliminating Thailand U23 and Malaysia U23 to come second in Group C.

The opponent of U23 Vietnam is likely to be U23 Japan, the team that has the most advantage to keep the top of Group D when the group stage closes.

The quarter-final match of U23 Vietnam will take place at 23:00 on Sunday, June 12.
