Ho Chi Minh CityThe Lab model was formed to attract overseas Vietnamese scientists to develop technology and commercialize products.

The new product research and development zone (QTSC R&D Labs) was formed by Quang Trung Software City (QTSC) with the goal of being a “midwife” for startup projects. After 4 years of establishment, QTSC R&D Labs has attracted many research groups, including a lab model led by overseas Vietnamese, which is considered a success in product commercialization and human resource training.

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Uyen (54 years old) Vietnamese overseas Vietnamese is one of the first experts to enter the lab. Specializing in researching technologies in agriculture, Dr. Uyen wants to develop IoT applications. To implement the project, he attracted 5 graduates of electronics and automation majors from the International University – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City to participate. These are young people who have a passion for research and are trained and guided by Dr. Uyen to do projects to develop creative skills and create products. “We need young people who are really passionate, and in terms of expertise, I believe that when they enter the lab, they will improve day by day. At this lab, I give you the key to come and work at any time.” , he said.

Dr. Uyen was supported by QTSC with nearly 4,000 m2 of land to experiment with the system. The group embarked on programming applications on phones to control IoT devices to operate irrigation systems, mix fertilizers and monitor nutritional indicators, surrounding environment for plants to grow…

This application helps users to monitor and control the entire operation of the garden. For large farms, the team developed a camera system attached to a drone that uses spectrum to detect water shortages for crops, alerting gardeners.

When the product is fully tested, QTSC supports the introduction to the market. TS Uyen’s IoT system in containers has been transferred to a business in Singapore for commercial purposes, the contract value is about 25,000 USD (more than 600 million VND).

According to Mr. Uyen, QTSC’s support in terms of premises and market connection has helped the project team reduce costs and have an exit for the product. After this success, Dr. Uyen’s team specializes in researching technologies at the prototype stage (prototype products) and then transferring them to enterprises to develop commercial products.

Another project is led by Dr. Ho Diep (49 years old), Vietnamese overseas Vietnamese led. Dr. Diep together with 8 experts in the fields of information technology, electronics… developed artificial intelligence application on 200 cameras, experimented right at Quang Trung Software Park to evaluate the feasibility of the application. processing data about vehicles, traffic situation.

At QTST, Mr. Diep was also supported with space, working location and cooperation with enterprises to exploit products.

Dr. Diep said that with a research team, having a solution testing area and connecting with partners and businesses to transfer technology is essential. “Every month, a business delegation comes to the lab to learn technology to cooperate, which is an opportunity for us to offer products and have new customers,” said Dr. Diep. The research team is cooperating with VNPT Tien Giang to provide smart solutions that are IoT stations to monitor salinity, water level, pH… on Mekong tributaries to help warn the authorities and people of the status salinization.

The story of testing and connecting with customers of Dr. Uyen and Dr. Diep are two of 7 projects at QTSC R&D Lab, which are in charge of overseas Vietnamese.

Talking about the reason for attracting overseas Vietnamese, Mr. Lam Nguyen Hai Long, Director of QTSC, said that the lab was established to research and develop products for domestic and international markets, improving the quality of technologies. Vietnam, instead of outsourcing to foreign countries. To do this, it is necessary to have a team of experts who have time to study and work abroad and overseas Vietnamese are the most suitable people.

According to Mr. Long, in order to be selected for the lab, scientists must come from research facilities at the university. These are passionate and well-trained professionals who live in a cross-cultural environment. Overseas Vietnamese have a long time abroad, so they have more opportunities to access new research, build cooperation relationships, copyright registration process…

“QTST is an intermediary to connect and promote them with businesses in the software park and both domestic and foreign enterprises with their relationships,” said Mr. Long.

According to the leader of QTSC, in the coming time, the unit will continue to order overseas Vietnamese for domestic technology needs and create conditions for testing new technologies. If the product is successful, QTSC will introduce to the city’s units, departments and businesses the practical application.

In addition to overseas Vietnamese projects, the lab is having a number of projects with potential products such as automatic medical examination kiosks being tested at Cho Ray hospital, fire fighting robots used at Tan Binh district fire police…
