Every once in a while, an emperor penguin will do something very strange. Every once in a while, a penguin will turn away from its flock and begin to make its way deep into the Antarctic continent. Keep away from food, water, and safety. It is alone towards its destined death. In the past, scientists have tried to prevent them by reintroducing them into the herd. But it will start its journey again, in the same direction, towards the same end point. Some will even become violent if stopped. Speculation is that this penguin is depressed and is committing suicide in a very austere way. Birds are a species that can experience depression or anxiety, but they tend to react to this in very immediate ways, such as excessive preening, unusual screaming or silence, loss of appetite… But no one knows why the penguins choose to be so negative.
