The United Nations elects 5 non-permanent members of the Security Council for the term 2023-2024

Japan, Switzerland, Ecuador, Malta and Mozambique are 5 countries elected this time with terms starting from January 1, 2023 and ending on January 31, 2025. These five countries will replace the Non-permanent Member State are India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway, ending their terms on December 31, 2022.

The Security Council consists of 15 countries, including 5 permanent members with veto power, including the US, China, France, Russia and the UK. According to the procedure, the United Nations General Assembly with 193 member states will vote to elect 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council. The winning country must receive a minimum of 128 votes in favor.

Of the countries elected this year, Mozambique received the highest number of votes with 192 votes. This is also the first time this country holds the position of a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

With the above results, in 2023, 10 countries in the role of non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council include Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Gabon, Ghana, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland and the United States. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will join the five permanent members of the Security Council, namely China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, to carry out the mission of maintaining international peace and security.
