On the fateful rainy night on the first day of July 2010, Hat met the biggest event in her life. That night, the flood surged, the Gam river “screamed”, swallowing many people in Na Ca village (Pac Mieu town, Bao Lam district, Cao Bang province). Hat held the youngest brother in his arms, helplessly watching his mother and 4-year-old brother swept away by the flood water.

Father Hat almost lost all his vitality, leaving behind the remaining 3 children. 3 children, the oldest is not yet 9 years old, the youngest can’t walk yet, drowning in the pain of being orphaned. So Hat was forced to become the “mother” of the children.
One month after her mother’s death, Hat decided to drop out of school. She couldn’t take care of her sister while continuing to pursue the word. The girl took care of the housework, taking care of the children so they wouldn’t be hungry. Carrying a child’s hat, taking the 6-year-old child up the mountain to find vegetables, cassava cooked into a meal, let the two children eat while I ate what they left.

One day, Hat was just looking for vegetables when she saw Ms. Luc Thi Toan, her homeroom teacher of class 3A, and her classmates standing in front of the house waiting. The girl who was as strong as a forest, managed to raise two children alone, suddenly hugged her teacher and burst into tears, as if so much self-pity, pent-up pain and trauma had been broken.
Toan came to encourage her father to let Hat continue to go to school. But her father at that time refused, even though the homeroom teacher tried to convince her. The reason? Who will take care of me when I go to school?
Ms. Toan thinks of an option that benefits everyone: The hat will bring the children to class with her. Perhaps, even at the time of suggesting that, Ms. Toan was not sure if her little student could overcome everything to continue studying.

Without helping the teacher, the “9-year-old mother” is the real hat that takes me to school. The little girl walked 2km, holding her older brother in her arms and carrying her younger brother, determined to go back to school. That day, not only Ms. Toan, but also all the teachers present at the school burst into tears.
Responding to the press, teacher Nong Thi Loi recalled, right after Hat returned to school, the teachers did not tell anyone, every morning came a little earlier to help Hat take care of her younger brother. During the school council meeting, Ms. Loi also suggested that the teachers in the school each contribute at least 10 thousand VND in a month to buy instant noodles for breakfast for the three sisters. Of course, all responded enthusiastically.

The story of Hat at that time attracted a lot of attention. Some benefactors also contributed some money to support three children, not letting them unfinished their studies because of the incident.
4 years after losing their mother, the three Hat sisters also lost their father. In 2014, Hat’s father also left the children, after falling seriously ill. The three Hat sisters were sent to Cao Bang Social Protection Center for better care.

Hoang Thi Cap, the girl who had to “be a mother” at the age of 9, experienced hardships and events that day, and gradually settled in the love and protection of good people who had no blood. Hat’s two brothers also grew up under the new roof.
After 12 years, Hoang Thi Cap has had a completely different life. The old thin, dirty girl grew up as strong as grass in the middle of the highlands.
Hat is 20 years old this year, full of vitality with smiling eyes. She excellently won a full scholarship to study Cultural Management at Guangxi Academy of Arts, China. Hat’s two younger siblings are grown up and well-educated.
