One of the most memorable dramas of 2021, still leaving a good impression in the audience’s hearts is Youth Of May (Youth of May) of a young couple Lee Do Hyun – Go Min Si. Lasting 12 episodes, this is a low budget movie, even without asking for enough funding, but everything is complete and perfect. Youth Of May Set in the Korean context of the 80s, based on the Gwangju democratization movement that took place from May 18 to 27, 1980. Exploiting a rather sensitive and tragic calendar context, the film did not cause controversy like many other similar films, even taking away a lot of tears from the audience. The narrator of Youth Of May is Hwang Hee Tae (Lee Do Hyun), a medical student, who is the pride of Gwangju province thanks to the valedictorian reputation of the medical field. He is the son of a tycoon, has an almost perfect life with a handsome face, a promising future, a rich family. His life changed starting from a meeting where he didn’t know that the person he met and fell in love with was just a “substitute”.
Without romanticizing or highlighting history, Youth Of May drains the audience’s tears with a very realistic and tragic story. That’s why, despite being born late, the film is still classified as a military agency, but the classic work SE (with tragic ending) of the Korean screen.
Especially in addition to the movie content, the visuals are also highly praised. Although it is a low-budget film, the setting in the 80s, the costumes with a bit of nostalgia are meticulously restored and designed.
