In the 8th minute, when the score was 0-0, Le Van Do kicked a free kick to the far corner of Timor Leste’s goal, towards midfielder Bui Hoang Viet Anh. But before Van Do touched the ball, Timor Leste’s defense simultaneously rose, causing Viet Anh and five teammates to be offside.

On the forum ASEAN Football Communitya fan took a picture of this situation and wrote: “A simple trick, but Vietnam is still trapped”.

“I didn’t watch it live, is this photo real?”, a fan expressed surprise.

Some people think that this trap phase shows the immaturity of the army led by Coach Park Hang-seo. Meanwhile, others were balanced when considering this as the result of coach Fabio Da Silva’s teachers and students because they practiced offside traps quite a lot before meeting the host Vietnam in the last round of Group A.

The case of more than half of a team’s squad getting caught offside in free kicks is not common in football. In the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, Japan once caused a fever when successfully trapping six Senegalese players offside in a 2-2 draw. Some fans call this the most successful offside trap in football history. However, this is always a risky decision and can cost the defending team dearly if a position loses focus.

More appreciated, but at the beginning of the second half, Vietnam only conceded Timor Leste thanks to Van Tung’s close header. More than ten minutes later, also from Van Xuan’s cross, Thanh Minh fixed a 2-0 victory for the army under Coach Park.

This victory helps Vietnam continue with the first place in Group A, and will meet the second team of Group B in the semi-finals. Before the last turn on May 16, Thailand had six points after three matches, one point behind Malaysia.
