There are many types of sutures, depending on the condition of the wound, the doctor will choose the corresponding type of suture.

Classification of sutures

The different types of sutures can be classified in several ways.

First, suture material can be classified as either absorbable or non-absorbable. Dissolvable sutures do not require the doctor to remove them after suturing the wound. This is because enzymes found in the body’s tissues naturally digest them. Sutures that do not dissolve will need to be removed by your doctor at a later date.

Second, suture materials can be classified according to the actual structure of the material. Sewing thread consists of a single thread. This allows the suture to pass more easily through the tissues. Braided sutures consist of several small threads braided together.

Third, sutures can be classified as being made from natural or synthetic materials. However, since all suture material is sterilized, this distinction is not particularly helpful.

Types of self-dissolving sutures

Gut: This natural fiber suture is used to repair wounds or tears in internal soft tissue. Gut should not be used for cardiovascular or neurological procedures. The body has the strongest reaction to this stitch and will often leave a scar. It is not commonly used outside of gynecological surgery.

Polydioxanone (PDS): This synthetic monofilament suture can be used for a variety of soft tissue wounds (such as abdominal sutures) as well as for pediatric cardiac procedures.

Poliglecaprone (MONOCRYL): This synthetic fiber suture is intended for general use in soft tissue repair. This material is not intended for use in cardiac or neurological procedures. This suture is most commonly used to close the skin invisibly.

Polyglactin (Vicryl): This synthetic braided suture is great for repairing hand or face lacerations. It should not be used for cardiovascular or neurological procedures.

Types of waterproof sutures

All of these sutures can be used collectively for soft tissue repair, including cardiovascular and neurological procedures:

– Nylon

– Polypropylene (Prolene)

– Silk

– Polyester (Ethibond)

Selection of suitable thread and stitching technique

Sewing thread materials are classified according to the diameter of the sewing thread. The grading system uses the letter “O” in front of a number to indicate the material diameter. The higher the number, the smaller the diameter of the sewing thread.

Thread material is also attached to the needle. Needles can have many different features. It can come in a variety of sizes, larger needles can close more tissue with each stitch while smaller needles are more likely to reduce scarring.

Just as there are different types of sutures, there are many types of stitching techniques. Some of them are:

Continuous stitch

This technique involves a series of stitches using a single thread of suture material. This type of suture can be placed quickly and is also very firm, as the tension is evenly distributed throughout the continuous stitch.

Sutures are interrupted

This suturing technique uses multiple threads of suture material to close the wound. After making a stitch, the material is cut and tied. This technique results in the wound being securely closed. If one of the stitches breaks, the rest of the stitches will still hold the wound together.

Deep stitches

This type of suture is placed under the layers of tissue below (deep) to the skin. They can be continuous or intermittent. This stitch is often used to close thin layers of film.

Burial place

This type of suture is applied so that the stitch button is found inside (that is, below or inside the area to be closed). This type of suture is not usually removed and is useful with large stitches deep in the body.

Drawstring sewing thread

This is a type of continuous suture that is placed around an area and tightened like a drawstring on a bag. For example, this type of suture would be used in your intestines to hold an bowel stapler in place.

Sutures under the skin

These sutures are placed in the dermis, the layer of tissue underneath the skin. Short stitches are placed in a straight line parallel to the wound. Stitches are then fixed at both ends of the wound.
