‘The new program does not give up or take history lightly’

According to experts, the History subject in the new program has not been dropped or taken lightly; What needs to be discussed is to teach History how to make students love it.

According to the new general education plan, the 10th grade program requires only seven subjects and compulsory educational activities including: Literature, Mathematics, Foreign Language 1, Physical Education, National Defense and Security Education, Activities Experience – career guidance, Local educational content.

They choose five other subjects from three groups of subjects (each group chooses at least one): Social Sciences (History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education); Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology); Technology and Arts (Technology, Informatics, Art – Music and Fine Arts).

The inclusion of History in the group of elective subjects at the high school level is controversial, although less than four months from now, the program will be implemented.

On the afternoon of May 11, presenting a report before the third session of the National Assembly, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Do Van Chien said that the public was concerned that this could cause problems.unpredictable consequences“It is necessary to innovate the way of teaching and learning to improve quality. History should not be an elective subject,” said Mr. Chien, and suggested the Ministry of Education have an appropriate solution.

Voters in Hoa Vang district, Cam Le district (Da Nang city) also frustrated and worried before the information “History was taken out of the compulsory curriculum at the high school level”. Voters believe that History is a hinge subject for students to form their personality, outlook on life and patriotism, so it must be a compulsory subject.

As the editor-in-chief throughout the History textbook (the series of Connecting Knowledge to Life), Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang, Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, commented that the controversial opinions showed the respectable social interest in the teaching and learning of History. On the other hand, he thinks the views need to be more thorough.

Professor Giang commented History is not being overlooked or eliminated in the new program. The new general education program is divided into two phases. The basic education stage (primary and junior high school) equips with basic general knowledge. The career-oriented education stage (high school) helps students approach careers and prepare for the post-high school period.

In the basic stage, History is a compulsory subject. Mr. Giang said all core knowledge, the development from primitive to ancient, medieval, modern and modern (called traditional history) of the world and Vietnam will be taught in this period.

Up to the high school level – the career orientation period, History is a subject in the social science group. History knowledge at this stage is divided into topics of analysis and synthesis in the direction of humanities and social sciences, not teaching traditional history as before. The new show also spends 20% of its time on local history. In addition, many compulsory subjects and activities such as national defense and security… are related to history.

In terms of duration, even if students don’t choose History in high school, the new program still has 71 more History periods than the old program. If they choose this subject, they will study more than 176 hours. Therefore, according to Mr. Giang, students who only finished grade 9 or did not choose History at high school level did not face a disadvantage in knowledge of common history.

Before saying that “History becomes an elective subject that will affect patriotic education”, experts disagree.

Professor Giang mentioned the fact that students used to celebrate or tore books or history outlines when they knew they didn’t have to take this subject in a certain exam. “If we had to study History, we would go back to the previous period, but did students love history at that stage? Learning History without love of history is not patriotic?”, he said.

Sharing the same opinion, Assoc. Newbies, apprentices, continuing education students, are also not patriotic?”.

Mr. Hien pointed out the fact that History was a compulsory subject in the old curriculum, but in many cases, it was only a formality. For example, students follow the A00 combination (Math, Physics, Chemistry), most do not study social subjects, including History. “Not only do they create conditions for students to focus only on studying a combination of strengths, serving graduation exams and university consideration; many schools also raise the scores of other subjects, helping students beautify their academic records. This is a reality. The bitter reality shows that even though it is a compulsory subject, the quality of teaching and learning History according to the old curriculum is still very poor”, said Mr. Hien and said that patriotic education is the responsibility of the whole society, not only the education sector. sex.

Assoc. Prof Hien pointed out that it is unreasonable if History becomes a “compulsory choice” subject in the new program, which means that every complex has this subject. He said that each phase of the new program has its own goals, targeting groups of students with different qualities and abilities. History topics at the high school level will be more intensive and difficult, and cannot be taught in large numbers. If you force students, it will backfire and create more serious consequences than in the previous period.

To be approved in 2018, the new general education program has undergone a long period of drafting, commenting and amending. The Ministry of Education and Training has also sent dispatches to localities, schools and solicited opinions of the whole people. Experts assert, The problem is not in choosing or obligatory with History. What needs to be discussed at this point is how to teach History.

Professor Giang said that education is on the right track to solve this problem, from renovating the curriculum, teaching and learning methods, and then the exam. The aim of innovation is to change the traditional way of learning and approach. Instead of forcing students to memorize timelines, the new program focuses on the meaning of events.

“When making textbooks, I ask my collaborators to create a set of books that students like, teach them what they need. Once students like them, they will learn on their own, no obligation,” he said. Jiang said.

Assoc. Hien also believes that choosing or forcing to study History is not the root of the problem. “Finding ways to improve the quality of teaching and learning History is a core and important issue that needs proper and long-term attention,” said Mr. Hien.

On the morning of May 12, at an expert consultation session, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son said that the ministry will consider options for teaching History subject at high school in the near future and consult relevant levels. authorization. It is expected that on May 22, the National Assembly Standing Committee will hold a plenary meeting to discuss this issue.
