More and more Vietnamese parents want to send their children to international schools from a young age, helping them to be equipped with skills and knowledge to be ready to realize all their dreams. However, with the cost barrier, not everyone has the conditions to turn their wishes into reality.

In fact, according to Ms. Thuy Do – who used to work in international schools in Ho Chi Minh City and is the author of the book Calmly practice self-study skillsifYou know how, you can absolutely help your child develop the same core skills that international schools aim for their students.

Try to refer to Ms. Thuy’s sharing about teaching, the good things at 100% International School, then try to apply the core principles in your daily parenting.

1. HOW DOES 100% INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TEACH STUDENTS?

First we need to understand the nature of an international school, i.e. a school that teaches 100% English. In Western countries, their educational program is generally different from Vietnam. The Ministry of Education will issue a set of knowledge and skills standards for each grade, each subject, from kindergarten to the end of high school. Each school must teach according to that knowledge and skill standard, do whatever they want, but students must achieve the knowledge standards set by the Ministry, achieving more or less depends on the level and ability of the student and of the teacher.

When a teacher takes a class, they will look at the standard of knowledge and skills to build a weekly or monthly lesson. It is entirely up to the teacher what set of textbooks they use, what materials they use, or what activities they use.

So when building a 100% international school in Vietnam, it is up to the investor to choose which country’s program orientation they choose, hire a principal, hire teachers, invest in facilities and promote the school. In general, this is a way of doing business, doing business in education, providing educational services, targeting the rich and rich, so it’s so expensive.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT STORY:

At the beginning of the year, they often apply student assessment in the form of formative assessment, mainly in English. This assessment they use to see what level the student is in terms of language ability, based on which they will know if he or she is making progress at the end of the term and at the end of the school year.

In a school year, in a subject with different units of knowledge, teachers usually build to teach in about 2 to 3 weeks. Thus, if a child has to learn to write, he or she has more time to do it, if today’s work is not done, tomorrow will continue. Teachers do not have to urge children to finish lessons, because they are not under pressure to run lessons like Vietnamese textbooks.

At the end of each unit, they have an exam, but the final assessment is through a portfolio. They look at daily work, test scores on end-of-unit tests, plus student interactions in class to see if he or she has acquired the necessary skills.

In addition, self-directed learning, both in class and at home, is an important part of the assessment. If you look at their assessment, you will see that the test plays only a very small role. What is important is how the child learns in class, how to interact, to answer the teacher’s questions, and how the daily articles in class play a very important role.

Teachers don’t care who is good, who is bad, but how they compare to the beginning of the year, compared to last week, last month, improve or not. For them, that is the most important thing. There are children who get A, get B, it also depends on their own ability and efforts, there’s no way teachers have to try for them to get the best grades. Spend money on it, but the teachers don’t fix the score at all. That’s right, they just do it, the Principal also has no right to interfere, is the attitude of the teachers with whom he has worked.

2. SCHOOL STORY

I would like to share about the main points I still remember about elementary school subjects, because that is the class I have observed the most.

1. Every early morning, the teacher introduces the subjects and lessons that will be learned today, then there is about 10-15 minutes of Circle time, the teacher sits with the students in a circle, asking about many other topics. different topics each day, and ask a lot about their feelings and habits. I find that this is a very important activity for the emotional connection between teachers and students.

2. Compulsory reading and journaling every day. In class, every day students have reading time, there is a reading corner, after finishing homework early, they go to the reading corner to sit and read by themselves. There is an independent reading time each day. Writing is a must every day, every day 15 minutes to write freely, and have a lot of time to write about books, write according to the requirements taught by the teacher. Reading books will be stories related to the content they are learning in science, in nature and society, etc.

3. There are library hours: The children go to the library, listen to the library teacher teach, and tell a certain story. You can borrow 2 books each week to take home to read.

4. Integrated learning between subjects: Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are developed equally in all subjects: Math, English Language and Science. Every subject is written, illustrated, presented, written in paragraphs and essays. The same subject is taught across multiple subjects. For example, in Science about plants, children read books about plants, about leaves, they tell stories or read poems related to trees. In Math, the teacher may choose a tree as an object to calculate, like the height of the tree, or the diameter of the trunk. Even in Drawing, children can draw about trees, then they collect, they plant trees to observe.

5. They learn to give presentations or work in groups on a daily basis, but at the same time create something in a variety of subjects and learning activities. From drawing products, to writing and decorating products. The children have time to complete these products, if they don’t do it today, they will do it tomorrow, unlike Vietnamese schools where parents do it at home and bring it up for the teacher to grade.

6. The children write freely, and about mistakes sometimes teachers correct, sometimes not. Once every 2-3 weeks, they have time to sit back and reopen what they have written to correct mistakes, to supplement, to write better.

7. They mostly use pencils to write articles so that they can easily erase when they make mistakes, or add them later, or correct them better.

3. TEACHERS’ DIFFERENCE

1. Communication with students is open and friendly with students.

2. I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know this, I try to google it, I also go back to look it up, the next day we will discuss this issue again. If I’m wrong, I’m sorry, I said the teacher said it wrong here, please correct it. Not shy, not ashamed when teachers do not know or do wrong.

3. Always motivate and encourage students a lot.

4. Strictly follow the given rules. At the beginning of the school year, teachers often discuss with students what is important to follow, then write them on a large piece of paper and let them sign their names. Every time the children are noisy in class, or they are noisy when moving, playing with each other, the class stops, the teacher takes the children to the table of rules and reads them together again.

5. Is it forbidden to let the naughty children go out to play, or punish them to always follow the teacher, or to sit separately, not to sit with other friends.

Through the above analysis, Ms. Thuy believes that, as a parent, parents can do the following things for their children, as teachers teach:

1. Parents who teach their children to self-study at home are not timed, you have 12 years of schooling plus a few years of kindergarten to do that, so why are you in a hurry to complain that your child is lazy and doesn’t study hard? It is very difficult not to take the time to train a child but to want him to be in order right away.

2. Have you taught your child the habit of reading?

3. Do you take the time to talk and be close to your child?

4. Where do you see your child’s education? Is it only in writing and memorizing lessons? Your child plays but does create something, that is learning.

5. Do you frankly say “I don’t know”, “I don’t know”, “I’m wrong”, “I’m wrong” to your children? Or anything wants to intervene, give the answer to the child?

6. Do you discuss with your child the house rules, and follow them strictly? Or you forgive, I say a little bit and you say “it’s okay, just 5 more minutes!”.

7. Do you monitor and see your child’s progress than before, or do you just look at your child’s school results, if you see that the results are not satisfactory, then think that your child is doing poorly?

QUICK – is a goal that everyone wants, quickly get results, quickly become good at English My brother and son quickly listen to me, and most of all: I don’t have to do much. In educating young people, if you want to be fast, it’s like breaking a tree branch to bend in a bonsai. The chance of successful bending is only about 10%, and broken branches are up to 90%.

That is also the reason why there is always a percentage of students who do not have good results in any school, whether international schools, specialized schools, public schools, village schools, etc. Same program, same teaching method, same teacher, why do children have different results? Part of it comes from the child himself – personality, interests, how the brain works, mental sensitivities and learning, part comes from family background.

As a parent, everyone wants their child to be successful and study effectively. The best you can do is create a learning environment and routine, motivate, encourage, instill dreams and ambitions, and help your child find effective ways to learn.”Thuy shared.
